2005 Poster Contest

Hidden Treasure of New Jersey: Our Native Rare Plants and their Habitats

Sponsored by the Partnerships for New Jersey Plant Conservation and

co-sponsors*

When you hear the words “endangered” or “threatened”, do you think only rainforests and animals? Here in the United States we are losing many species of our rare native plants at an alarming rate. Many people believe only animals are endangered. In fact, there are more endangered plant species in the United States than there are animal species! Plants support wildlife, a healthy environment, and people. There is a lot to know about our native plants. Why are they so important to us? How do they support wildlife? How do they ensure a healthy environment? What are NJ’s native rare plant species? And how do we protect NJ’s native rare plants in their environments?

The Message: Create an original poster depicting a NJ rare plant in its NJ natural habitat.  Utilize the master list of rare plants at the NJ Natural Heritage Program web site for your source of rare plants. The link is http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforest/natural/heritage/rarelist.html

The theme is that these plants and their habitats are hidden treasures and the poster must reflect this theme. Young artists are encouraged to think creatively.
